The VisMasters Online: SketchUp Video Training for Architects & Designers on-demand videos are pre-recorded training lessons designed to teach the basic concepts SketchUp uses in daily production. Each module is taught by expert instructors who work day-to-day in the architecture and visualizations industry. Each module is a 30-40 minute self-contained lesson that covers the critical aspects of SketchUp usage, and builds upon the instruction provided with each subsequent module.

Training modules are designed for users with little or no experience in SketchUp or users who wish to become more proficient with the product.

SketchUp Essentials

The first module provides an overview of the software interface. It describes the most commonly used toolbars and their functions as well as the basic 2D & 3D drawing concepts (inference) in SketchUp. Drawing tools like the pencil, arc, and shapes as well as editing tools like push-pull, moving, copying, scaling, rotating & erasing will be explained in detail. Geometry selection, layer organization and entity information will also be explained. This module provides you the basis and foundation for how to model in SketchUp.

Navigating & Viewing the 3D Model

This module focuses on the navigation and model viewing tools in SketchUp. It explains the different orthographic views as well as the different camera types including three-point and two-point perspective. The navigation tools include orbiting, panning and different zooming tools as well as “walking” tools. The Scenes rollout is explained in detail and it will show you how different views and properties can be saved in each scene.

Modeling Tools & Annotation

This module focuses on key modeling tools including push-pull, follow me, offset and model axis. These are important tools to understand. Their power as well as their limitations are explained in more detail in this module. Additional tools used for annotation in SketchUp are shown and explained, which include measuring, dimensioning and 2D & 3D text addition. The section tool is a great way to explore and display SketchUp models, and its use and properties are explained.

Presentation Output, Stills & Animations

This module shows you the presentation tools available in SketchUp. Display Styles are explained in detail and this module shows you how to gain complete control over the style and look of your SketchUp renderings. Lines, face colors, backgrounds, watermarks are all demonstrated to help you create the look you want. Exporting 2D images is explained and shows how to achieve the best quality output. The scenes rollout is explained in detail to show how to create animations of your SketchUp model and adjust their properties.

Google Earth and 3D Warehouse

This module focuses on the integration of SketchUp with Google Earth and the 3D Warehouse. This module shows how to export your SketchUp model into Google Earth in real world coordinates and share it with others. The 3D Warehouse is a collection of SketchUp models available to everyone. This module also explains how to export your model to this public database as well as import models from other SketchUp users into yours.

  • Required: Google SketchUp 6 or Google SketchUp Pro 6 (Course taught on the PC version, however both PC and MAC versions are identical for the purposes of this training).
